The Second International Conference on Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education

19-20 February, 2025, INTI International College, Subang, Malaysia
If you don’t understand, how can you learn? Schooling is not the same as learning. Mother tongue-based multilingual education (MTB-MLE) is about effective learning. That children learn better in their mother tongue first has been empirically proven in many international studies. Even in OECD countries, PISA tests found that students speaking a different language at home than at school are 15% more likely to perform poorly in mathematics learning.

In collaboration with INTI Foundation, the Inisiatif Pengislahan Pendidikan Nasional (IPPN) or National Education Reform Initiative, a network of 16 educational non-governmental organisations in Malaysia, is organising the second Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) International Conference in Malaysia. The first one was held on 23-25 November, 2021.

International Conference on Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education 2021

23-25 November, 2021, Zoom
“If you don’t understand, how can you learn?” and children learn better in their mother tongue first, the effectiveness of mother tongue education has already been proven in numerous empirical studies and recognized in the international community. Nevertheless, the questions of national identity and social unity still remain challenges in post-colonised countries, including Malaysia.

To create a platform of discussion, the International Conference on Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) was held in November 2021, to address the important issues of language, mother tongue and multilingual education and social cohesion etc.
